Wing-backs Dest and Robinson key in USMNT win over Senegal
Wing-backs Dest and Robinson key in USMNT win over Senegal

The United States men's national team secured a 3-2 victory over Senegal on Sunday, with Sergiño Dest scoring the opening goal after a well-worked spell of possession. The goal highlighted the chemistry between wing-backs Antonee Robinson and Dest, who started together for the first time under Mauricio Pochettino.

Restored Tandem Sparks Attack

Robinson and Dest, both key players in the 2022 World Cup cycle, have been hampered by injuries in recent months. Dest missed the 2024 Copa América due to a torn ACL, while Robinson sat out much of last fall with knee issues. On Sunday, their return to the starting lineup brought a new dynamism to the US attack.

Robinson, known for his positional discipline, and Dest, a more dynamic presence, complement each other well. Their ability to form passing triangles and exploit space was evident from the start.

The Opening Goal

Just five minutes into the match, Ricardo Pepi forced Senegal goalkeeper Mory Diaw to clear the ball, sparking a 20-pass sequence that ended with Dest's tap-in. The buildup saw right center-back Alex Freeman shift wide, allowing Dest to join the attack. Tim Ream played the ball to Robinson, who combined with Pepi and Christian Pulisic before Pulisic crossed to Dest for the finish.

The goal, scored 64 seconds after Diaw's clearance, showcased the team's improved chemistry. Pochettino has experimented with lineups during his tenure, but Sunday's performance suggested a growing understanding among players.

Defensive Lapses Remain

Despite the win, the US showed occasional defensive frailties. Sadio Mané's first goal came from a turnover by Robinson and Tyler Adams, who had not started together since November 2024. However, the overall cohesion was a positive sign.

With the World Cup on home soil in 2026, the US will face Paraguay and Australia in group play, followed by a match against Turkey. The team will need to maintain this level of performance against more defensive opponents.

Christian Pulisic, who contributed an assist, continues to lead the attack. The win over Senegal, ranked among the world's top dozen, provides a boost of confidence as the tournament approaches.
