Former Brumbies lock Tom Staniforth is set to make his international debut for France, while uncapped back-rower Lachlan Shaw will earn his first Wallabies cap in the upcoming Test match. The selections mark a significant milestone for both players, with Staniforth qualifying for France through his French heritage.
Staniforth's Journey to Les Bleus
Staniforth, who played 28 Super Rugby matches for the Brumbies between 2015 and 2018, has been named in France's starting XV for their Test against Argentina. The 27-year-old lock moved to France in 2018, joining Top 14 side Castres before later playing for Clermont. His eligibility for France was confirmed after meeting World Rugby's three-year residency requirement, though he also holds a French passport through his grandmother.
“It’s a dream come true to represent France,” Staniforth said. “I’ve worked hard since arriving in Europe, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to wear the blue jersey.”
Lachlan Shaw's Wallabies Call-Up
Meanwhile, Lachlan Shaw, a 23-year-old back-rower from the Western Force, has been selected for his first Wallabies cap. Shaw, who has impressed in Super Rugby Pacific this season, will come off the bench against Scotland. Wallabies coach Eddie Jones praised Shaw's work ethic, stating, “Lachlan has shown tremendous development and deserves his chance at Test level.”
Shaw's inclusion adds depth to the Wallabies' back-row, which has been hit by injuries to key players. The match against Scotland is part of Australia's preparation for the Rugby World Cup.
Impact on the Rugby Landscape
Staniforth's debut for France highlights the growing trend of players switching national allegiances through residency or heritage. For the Wallabies, Shaw's emergence signals a new generation of talent coming through the ranks. Both matches will be closely watched as teams finalize their World Cup squads.
Staniforth will become the second Australian-born player to represent France in recent years, following in the footsteps of former Wallabies under-20 player Rory Arnold. The Test against Argentina is scheduled for Saturday at Stade de France.
