The ACT Sport Hall of Fame has inducted nine new members, including three Paralympians, at a ceremony in Canberra. Michael Milton, one of Australia's greatest Paralympians, used the occasion to call for greater recognition of athletes with disabilities.
Milton, who has won 11 Paralympic medals including six gold, said hall of fame organisations are 'a little bit behind the times' in representing disability sport. He was joined by Paralympic coach Chris Nunn and athlete Lisa Llorens, who expressed surprise and honour at her induction.
Other inductees include lawn bowls champion Adam Jeffery, AFL star Craig Bolton, hockey administrator Graham Carter, basketballer Sue Geh, rugby player Geoff Larkham, and rugby league official John McIntyre. The hall of fame, established in 1995, now has over 100 members.
Bolton, a two-time All-Australian, said it was humbling to join names he admired growing up in Canberra. Jeffery, whose career began in 1992, said competition was all he wanted. The inductees span sports from local rugby league to international hockey, reflecting the capital's sporting heritage.
