Jess Fox Backs Teammates at Home World Champs After Kidney Surgery

Triple Olympic champion Jess Fox says she is recovering well from surgery to remove a kidney tumour, but will miss next week's ICF Slalom World Championships in Penrith. The 31-year-old was set to lead the Australian team at the event, held from September 29 to October 4, but a surprise discovery of a tumour forced her to step back.

Fox admitted the situation has been tough to process, but emphasized that prioritizing her health was essential. 'If I'm on that start line, I want to be ready and I want to be at my best, and I had to put my health first,' she said. Despite her absence, she plans to support her teammates as a cheerleader.

Fox's sister Noémie will now lead the Australian team, competing in kayak, canoe, and kayak cross. Jess expressed confidence in her sibling, noting she has been training well. 'I'm a big sister and a supporter this time. I'll have a big sign and I'll be the cheerleader,' Fox said.

Another athlete to watch is 18-year-old Codie Davidson, a local from Penrith who will debut in senior worlds in the kayak cross. Fox offered words of encouragement, urging Davidson to enjoy the moment and soak up the support from family and friends.

Fox remains uncertain about her return to competition but plans to start flat-water paddling in the coming weeks. 'There's no set date yet, but in the next couple of weeks, I think I'll be back having a float on the flat water,' she said.
