Wigan Warriors delivered a commanding performance to beat Warrington Wolves 34-12 at the DW Stadium on Friday night, extending their lead at the top of the Super League table to four points.
First-Half Dominance Sets the Tone
The hosts raced to a 20-0 lead at halftime, with winger Liam Marshall scoring two of his three tries in the opening period. Marshall crossed in the 12th and 28th minutes, while captain Liam Farrell added another try in the 35th minute. Stand-off Bevan French converted two of the three tries to give Wigan a comfortable cushion.
Warrington struggled to contain Wigan's attacking flair, with the Warriors completing 92% of their sets in the first half compared to Warrington's 78%. The Wolves also conceded six penalties, allowing Wigan to build pressure and territory.
Second-Half Response Falls Short
Warrington came out stronger after the break, with full-back Matt Dufty scoring a try in the 47th minute, converted by Stefan Ratchford. However, Wigan responded almost immediately through Marshall's third try in the 52nd minute, which French converted to restore the 20-point lead.
Warrington hooker Danny Walker scored a try in the 65th minute, but it proved to be a consolation as Wigan sealed the win with late tries from second-rower Kai Pearce-Paul and prop Ethan Havard. French finished with five goals from six attempts, contributing 10 points.
Key Performances and Statistics
Liam Marshall's hat-trick was the highlight, taking his season try tally to 15. Bevan French was influential with two try assists and 10 points. Wigan's defence was also impressive, making 42 tackles inside their own 20-metre zone without conceding a try from close range.
Warrington, who remain third in the table, were hampered by errors, completing only 80% of their sets overall. They also lost second-rower Ben Currie to a head injury assessment in the first half and did not return.
The win extends Wigan's winning streak to five matches, while Warrington have now lost two of their last three. According to Warriors head coach Matt Peet, "The first half was as good as we've played all season. We were clinical in attack and our defensive line speed was excellent."
Implications for the Super League Title Race
Wigan now sit four points clear of second-placed St Helens, who have a game in hand. Warrington are third, six points behind Wigan but with a superior points difference over fourth-placed Catalans Dragons. With eight rounds remaining, the victory gives Wigan a significant advantage in the race for the League Leaders' Shield.
