Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson Set to Quit Monday

Shane Richardson's tenure as Wests Tigers chief executive is expected to end on Monday, following a week of turmoil at the club. The veteran administrator, who joined in late 2023 as a potential saviour, is increasingly unlikely to remain in the role.

The crisis escalated on Friday when a complaint was lodged with the NRL regarding Richardson's financial dealings. The issue involves a company co-owned by Richardson and his son, which was contracted for digital marketing and branding work. Richardson maintains all deals were transparent and approved by the board via a tender process.

The situation has been exacerbated by the Holman Barnes Group's decision to remove Barry O'Farrell as chair and three other independent directors on Monday. The owners, who hold a 90 per cent stake in the club, claimed they were excluded from key commercial decisions. Richardson, who worked closely with O'Farrell and supported independent directors, is now considering his future.

Fan groups and former player Beau Ryan have urged NRL CEO Peter V'landys to intervene, with a rally planned for December 13. V'landys has expressed concerns but noted the NRL only intervenes in extreme circumstances. Richardson's departure would leave the club seeking a new chief, with current head of football Shaun Mielekamp a potential candidate.

Despite securing Jarome Luai's arrival and progress on stadium upgrades, Richardson's chances of leading the Tigers to finals or upgraded suburban grounds appear slim. The club has been out of finals for 12 seasons and suffered three straight wooden spoons before his appointment.
