A devastating Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv has damaged one of Ukraine's most significant religious sites, the Dormition Cathedral at the Unesco-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The assault also struck residential buildings across the capital.
Damage to Sacred Site
The Dormition Cathedral, a key part of the historic Orthodox monastery complex, was set ablaze during the overnight barrage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it 'one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date.'
Wider Attack on Kyiv
The attack involved multiple missiles and drones, targeting not only the monastery but also civilian infrastructure. Emergency services responded to fires and rescues in residential areas.
Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Monastery of the Caves, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The damage to the cathedral is seen as a deliberate strike on Ukraine's cultural and religious heritage.
