Stuart opens up on Young contract talks

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has opened up on contract negotiations with young back-rower Hudson Young, revealing that talks are progressing positively. Stuart expressed confidence that the club will secure the services of the emerging talent, who has become a key figure in the Raiders' forward pack.

Contract negotiations update

Speaking to media, Stuart confirmed that discussions with Young's management have been constructive. “We’re working through it,” Stuart said. “Hudson is a player we want to keep long-term. He’s developed immensely over the past couple of seasons, and we see him as a vital part of our future.”

Young, 24, has been with the Raiders since his junior days and made his NRL debut in 2020. He has since established himself as a regular starter, known for his aggressive defence and improving attack. His current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, but the Raiders are keen to extend his stay.

Young's importance to the team

Stuart highlighted Young's growth as a player and leader. “He’s one of those players who leads by example. His work rate is outstanding, and he’s always looking to improve. That’s the kind of attitude we want in our squad,” Stuart added.

Young’s performances have also attracted interest from rival clubs, but Stuart is optimistic that a deal will be reached. “We’re not going to rush it, but we’re confident we can get something done. Hudson wants to be here, and we want him here.”

Raiders' retention strategy

The Raiders have been active in securing their key players, with recent extensions for stars like Jack Wighton and Josh Papalii. Retaining Young is seen as a priority to maintain the club's forward depth. The club’s management is working within the salary cap to ensure a balanced roster.

Stuart also praised Young’s versatility, noting his ability to play both edge and middle forward roles. “He’s become a really important player for us. His ability to adapt to different positions gives us a lot of flexibility,” Stuart said.

While no official announcement has been made, the Raiders are hopeful of finalising the extension before the start of the 2024 season. Fans will be eager to see Young remain in Canberra green for years to come.
