Ryan Papenhuyzen Released by Melbourne Storm Immediately

The Melbourne Storm has granted an immediate release to Ryan Papenhuyzen, who had one year remaining on his contract. The 27-year-old fullback played 113 matches for the Storm and was named the Clive Churchill medallist in Melbourne's 26-20 win over the Penrith Panthers in the 2020 NRL grand final.

Papenhuyzen will be taking time away from rugby league to consider his future, according to a statement from the Storm. He has been rumoured to be a target for rebel rugby union competition R360, along with other NRL stars.

Papenhuyzen expressed gratitude for his time at the Storm, saying, 'I've loved my time at Melbourne Storm. I've enjoyed close to a decade of incredible memories and experiences in the purple jersey.' He thanked the club, teammates, coaches, and staff for their support.

Melbourne Storm chairman Matt Tripp said the club was disappointed to lose their fullback but respected Papenhuyzen's decision to take absence from the game. 'Ryan has shown great character and resilience throughout his time at our club,' Tripp said.

Papenhuyzen joined the Storm in 2017 after moving from Wests Tigers and made his NRL debut in 2019. After winning the 2020 premiership, he was plagued by injuries but played more regularly in 2024 and 2025, helping the Storm reach the grand final in both years.
