Melbourne Storm backrower Eli Katoa remains in hospital in Auckland after undergoing emergency brain surgery following three head impacts during a Pacific Championships match against New Zealand 12 days ago. The 25-year-old Tonga international suffered a seizure on the sideline after the game, leading to surgery to release bleeding on the brain.
Storm chief executive Justin Rodski said Katoa is in a stable condition and improving, but faces a long recovery. The club is arranging to bring him back to Australia, where he will meet specialists to determine the next steps, which could include a rehabilitation centre. Rodski declined to speculate on Katoa's playing future, stating it would be unfair to make any statements beyond supporting his return to full health.
Katoa appeared to suffer a concussion during the warmup when his head collided with teammate Lehi Hopoate, but was allowed to play. He received two more head impacts during the game before the seizure. The NRL is investigating the circumstances that led to Katoa taking the field.
The Storm's players and staff have been deeply affected by the incident, with welfare officer Young Tonumaipea and chair Matt Tripp visiting Katoa in hospital. Rodski described the situation as heartbreaking but highlighted the club's strong support network.
