The National Rugby League (NRL) is poised to set a new world record for the largest gathering of people wearing party hats, as fans gather to celebrate the 31st birthday of former South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Jai Arrow. Arrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in May, forcing him into early retirement. Since then, the NRL estimates that around $1 million has been raised in his support.
World Record Attempt at Accor Stadium
Sunday's clash between South Sydney and Newcastle at Accor Stadium doubled as the 'world's biggest birthday party' for Arrow. Hundreds of fans queued up in party hats waiting for the gates to open at 12:30 pm AEST, while others received hats upon entry. The NRL printed approximately 10,000 hats for distribution on game day, with thousands more sold online by fans showing virtual support.
Jai Arrow's Emotional Response
Arrow himself was on hand for the event, having married long-term partner Berina the same week and attending Wednesday night's State of Origin decider. Speaking to Fox Sports' pre-match broadcast, Arrow said, "Unreal. I'm truly honoured to be here. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of me and my family's heart. I get emotional thinking about it (the support)."
Fundraising and Entertainment
Sunday's game-day raffle at Accor Stadium was also pledged to Arrow and his family, who will receive all proceeds from the fundraising. The Wiggles were organized to perform half-time entertainment, with a giant 120-kilogram birthday cake available after the game. Singer-songwriter KYE performed with an acoustic guitar before the match and wished Arrow a happy birthday after her final song.
World Record Assessment
The NRL will submit footage to Guinness World Records for assessment, but officials are confident of having broken the standing mark of 1,924 people wearing party hats. That record was achieved at Ohio State University last year during birthday celebrations for the school's mascot.
Looking Ahead
Arrow and his partner are scheduled to fly to the United States next week to attend the FIFA World Cup final. The NRL's efforts underscore the league's commitment to supporting Arrow and raising awareness for MND.
