Knights Teen Keeley Targets Strong Preseason After Shock NRL Debut

Newcastle Knights rookie Oryn Keeley is eager to begin his first full NRL preseason after a surprise debut in round 23 last season. The 19-year-old, from Mannering Park, will join a group of young players starting their top-flight preseason when training begins next month.

Keeley's debut came unexpectedly against Canberra after back-rower Tyson Frizell withdrew with a lingering injury. Keeley, who had been 18th man and played only two reserve grade games, was told minutes before kick-off that he would play. He admitted the moment was overwhelming, saying he broke down in tears before teammates rallied around him.

Playing the final 14 minutes, Keeley missed a tackle on Raiders prop Josh Papali'i that led to the match-winning try. He described the experience as a learning opportunity and said he has moved past it. The youngster received support from senior players including Frizell, Mitchell Barnett, and David Klemmer, who shared stories of their own difficult debuts.

Keeley's 2022 season also included representing NSW in under-19s Origin and being part of the Knights' Jersey Flegg grand final side, though he missed the match due to suspension. He said the year was a dream come true but stressed the importance of backing it up with consistent performances.

Looking ahead, Keeley is focused on making an impact in preseason training. 'I want to nail the first day of preseason and then just go day by day and get fitter and fitter,' he said. He aims to be properly prepared for his next first-grade opportunity.
