The Canberra rugby league community has rallied around Gungahlin Bulls stalwart Steve Keir after he suffered a stroke, raising more than $30,000 to support his recovery.
Community Response
Keir, a beloved figure in the local rugby league scene, was hospitalised last month following a stroke. The fundraising campaign, launched by the Gungahlin Bulls club, has seen an outpouring of support from players, officials, and fans across the region.
As of Wednesday, the GoFundMe page had raised over $30,000, surpassing its initial target of $20,000. Club president Mark Asimus expressed gratitude for the generosity. "Steve has given so much to the club and the community, and it's heartwarming to see everyone come together to support him in his time of need," Asimus said.
Steve Keir's Legacy
Keir, 58, has been involved with the Gungahlin Bulls for more than three decades as a player, coach, and administrator. He is widely regarded as a "Mr. Gungahlin" for his tireless contributions to the club. His son, Jake Keir, also plays for the Bulls, continuing the family legacy.
The stroke has left Keir with significant health challenges, including difficulty speaking and moving. His family has been by his side throughout his hospital stay, and the funds raised will help cover medical expenses and rehabilitation costs.
Wider Rugby League Support
The fundraising effort has drawn support from beyond the Gungahlin community, with players and clubs from the Canberra Raiders Rugby League and other local leagues contributing. Raiders legend Alan Tongue also shared a message of support, urging fans to donate.
"Steve is a true champion of the game in Canberra, and we all want to see him back on his feet," Tongue said.
As the campaign continues, the Bulls are planning additional fundraising events, including a charity match and auction. The community remains hopeful for Keir's full recovery.
