Australia on brink of T20 World Cup semi-finals after crushing Pakistan
Australia crush Pakistan to near T20 World Cup semis

Australia are all but assured of a place in the Women's T20 World Cup semi-finals after demolishing Pakistan by 113 runs at Headingley, though Beth Mooney's finger injury provided a worrying subplot.

Dominant batting display

Ellyse Perry led the charge with a brilliant 71 off 48 balls, combining with Georgia Voll (39) for a 100-run partnership off just 56 deliveries. Perry's innings featured nine fours and a six, as she punished the Pakistan attack with particular ferocity on the leg side. Nicola Carey (26 not out off 13) and Annabel Sutherland (27 off 18) provided late fireworks, lifting Australia to 7-199.

Pakistan's reply never gained traction, with two chaotic run-outs in the powerplay undermining their chase. Muneeba Ali's aggressive 50-ball knock kept them in the hunt briefly, but Ellyse Perry removed her for 38 with her first ball — a bouncer that Muneeba pulled straight to deep field.

Bowling rout

Australia used eight bowlers, with Perry (2-9), captain Sophie Molineux (2-6) and Annabel Sutherland (2-12) the most effective. Pakistan were bowled out for 86 with 38 balls remaining, their third consecutive loss in the tournament.

Mooney injury concern

Wicketkeeper Beth Mooney endured a difficult day. She was dismissed for a golden duck off the first ball of the match, then injured a finger while standing up to the stumps. The problem was aggravated when she attempted a flying catch off Kim Garth. This follows a back complaint that forced her to retire hurt in the previous match against the Netherlands.

"It wasn't the best of days for Mooney," a team spokesperson said.

Group stage implications

Australia's net run rate is now so superior that they are effectively through to the semi-finals with a game to spare. Their final group match is against India at Lord's on Sunday. India, having lost to South Africa, likely need to win to qualify. Australia, however, will be motivated to finish top of the group, which would give them two extra days of preparation before the final and likely avoid a semi-final against hosts England.
