Autumn Glow has extended her unbeaten run to eight with victory in the $10 million Golden Eagle at Randwick on Saturday. Ridden expertly by champion jockey James McDonald, the mare broke clear on the turn and had far too much power down the straight.
She burst clear of Sepals, who held on for second, while Evaporate rounded out the top three. The latest victory, her eighth from as many starts, showed comparisons to legendary Winx are on the money.
Trainer Chris Waller said we are witnessing something “special” with Autumn Glow. “She’s a star, it’s as simple as that, she does it every time. There’s nothing that shows us that much at home, but that heart and determination and presence that she has is really quite special,” he told Channel 7.
McDonald was in awe of his four-year-old mare and believes she hasn’t yet hit her peak. “She gives me that ooh-la-la feeling. I’d love to see her in a Cox Plate,” McDonald said. “I don’t think we’ve seen the best version of her yet either, we’re so lucky to have her.”
When asked if he had made comparisons to his former star Winx, Waller was quick to dismiss any talk. “I don’t care if she gets beaten, she’s a star in herself and the sequence is irrelevant.”
