Portugal beat Uzbekistan 3-0 to top Group K

Portugal delivered a commanding performance to defeat Uzbekistan 3-0 and clinch first place in World Cup Group K. The victory, played at the Al Janoub Stadium, ensured Portugal advanced to the knockout stage with maximum points from the group stage.

First-half dominance sets the tone

Portugal took control early, with Bruno Fernandes opening the scoring in the 15th minute. The midfielder collected a pass from Bernardo Silva and fired a low shot past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Eldorbek Suyunov. Fernandes doubled the lead just before halftime, converting a penalty after a handball in the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo added the third goal in the 63rd minute, heading home a cross from Diogo Dalot. The goal marked Ronaldo's 10th in World Cup tournaments, further cementing his legacy. Portugal dominated possession throughout, holding 68% of the ball and registering 14 shots on goal to Uzbekistan's 3.

Uzbekistan's resistance broken

Uzbekistan, who needed a win to have any chance of advancing, struggled to create clear opportunities. Their best chance came in the 70th minute when substitute Jasurbek Yakhshiboev forced a save from Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Despite their efforts, the Uzbek team could not break through Portugal's disciplined defense.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised his team's focus. "We knew Uzbekistan would be tough, but we executed our game plan perfectly. The early goals settled us, and we controlled the match from start to finish," Martinez said. Uzbekistan captain Odiljon Hamrobekov acknowledged Portugal's superiority. "They are a world-class team. We gave our best, but they were too strong today."

Group standings and next opponents

Portugal finished top of Group K with 9 points, followed by Uruguay with 4 points, Uzbekistan with 3, and South Korea with 1. Portugal will face the runners-up of Group H in the round of 16, while Uzbekistan's tournament ends with a third-place finish.

The result extends Portugal's unbeaten run in World Cup group stages to 12 matches. Ronaldo, at 39, became the oldest player to score in a World Cup match for Portugal. The victory also marked Portugal's 100th win in international football since 2018.
