Norway Edge Past Senegal in World Cup Group Stage
Norway defeated Senegal 2-1 in a tightly contested World Cup 2026 group stage match at the Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday. The win puts Norway in a strong position to advance to the knockout rounds.
The match began at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating early chances. Norway took the lead in the 23rd minute when Erling Haaland latched onto a through ball from Martin Ødegaard and slotted past Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. Haaland's clinical finish marked his third goal of the tournament.
Senegal responded well and equalized just before halftime. A corner kick from Sadio Mané found the head of Kalidou Koulibaly, who powered the ball past Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. The goal was Koulibaly's first of the competition.
Second Half Decided by Ødegaard's Brilliance
Norway regained the lead in the 67th minute through a stunning free kick from captain Martin Ødegaard. The Arsenal midfielder curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner, leaving Mendy with no chance. It was Ødegaard's second goal of the World Cup.
Senegal pushed for an equalizer in the final 20 minutes, with Mané and Boulaye Dia both going close. However, Norway's defense, marshaled by Stian Gregersen, held firm to secure the victory.
According to FIFA statistics, Norway had 54% possession and registered 12 shots to Senegal's 9. The win moves Norway to four points from two matches, while Senegal remain on three points.
Implications for Group Standings
The result leaves Group H wide open, with Norway leading the group on four points, followed by Senegal on three. The Netherlands and Ecuador, who play later, could also factor into the qualification race. Norway's next match is against the Netherlands, while Senegal face Ecuador.
Norwegian coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team's resilience after the match. "We knew Senegal would be tough, but the players showed great character to come back after their equalizer. Martin's free kick was world-class," he said.
Senegal coach Aliou Cissé expressed disappointment but remained optimistic. "We gave everything but made small mistakes. We still have a chance to qualify and will fight until the end," he commented.
