France Advance with Hard-Fought Win
France survived a spirited challenge from Paraguay to win 2-1 in their World Cup last-32 clash on Saturday, advancing to the round of 16. Kylian Mbappé’s 78th-minute strike proved the difference after Paraguay had equalised early in the second half.
The French side, world champions in 2018, dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down a disciplined Paraguayan defence. They took the lead in the 32nd minute through Antoine Griezmann, who slotted home after a neat pass from Mbappé. Paraguay, however, responded well and levelled in the 51st minute when Miguel Almirón converted a cross from Ángel Romero.
Mbappé Seals Victory
With the match poised at 1-1, France increased the pressure. Mbappé, who had been relatively quiet, produced a moment of brilliance in the 78th minute, cutting inside from the left and firing a low shot into the far corner. Paraguay pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but France held firm to secure the win.
France coach Didier Deschamps praised his team’s resilience after the match. “We knew it would be tough. Paraguay are a strong side, and they made us work for it. But we showed character and quality to get the result,” he said. Paraguay coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto lamented his side’s missed chances. “We had opportunities but couldn’t take them. France are a top team, and we gave them a good game,” he added.
Statistics and Key Moments
France had 58% possession and registered 14 shots, with six on target, compared to Paraguay’s eight shots and three on target. The match was played in front of 45,000 spectators at the Kazan Arena. France will now face either Argentina or Nigeria in the round of 16.
The victory extends France’s unbeaten run in World Cup knockout matches to six games, dating back to their 2018 campaign. For Paraguay, it marks the end of a tournament in which they exceeded expectations by reaching the last 32.
