Cape Verde made history on Friday by securing their first-ever World Cup victory, defeating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in a thrilling Group C encounter at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.
First Half Dominance
The Blue Sharks dominated the opening 45 minutes, taking the lead in the 23rd minute through a well-worked team goal. Midfielder Jamiro Monteiro played a perfectly weighted through ball to forward Djaniny Tavares, who slotted calmly past Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais. Cape Verde doubled their advantage just before halftime when defender Stopira rose highest to meet a corner kick, powering a header into the net.
Saudi Fightback Falls Short
Saudi Arabia came out with renewed energy in the second half, pressing high and creating several chances. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Salem Al-Dawsari converted a penalty after a handball in the box. The Green Falcons pushed for an equalizer but were denied by a combination of solid defending and wasteful finishing. Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha made crucial saves to preserve the lead.
Historic Victory for Cape Verde
According to FIFA, this win is a landmark moment for Cape Verde, a nation of just over 500,000 people. Coach Bubista said: "This is a dream come true for our country. We believed we could compete at this level, and today we showed it." The victory puts Cape Verde top of Group C with three points, while Saudi Arabia remain winless after two matches.
