Marcus Trescothick has defended England's preparations for the Ashes series in Australia, dismissing criticism from former players including Ian Botham and Geoffrey Boycott. England will play only one warm-up match, against the Lions, before the first Test begins next Friday.
Botham described the schedule as 'bordering on arrogance,' while Boycott called it 'madness.' Trescothick acknowledged their opinions but argued that modern cricket schedules make additional warm-up games impractical. 'Times have dramatically changed in the way that cricket is done,' he said, noting that similar approaches have been used in recent series.
Trescothick pointed out that Australia had only one warm-up game before the 2023 Ashes in England, which they retained after a 2-2 draw. He also highlighted that England's squad has been consistent and confident. 'We're very happy with the preparations,' he stated.
When asked about comparisons between his past use of mints to aid ball shine and Australia's sandpapergate scandal, Trescothick laughed off the suggestion. 'I think those days have sort of changed,' he said, adding that Ashes cricket is 'great fun.'
