England captain Ben Stokes and in-form fast bowler Gus Atkinson have both been omitted from the squad for the upcoming second Test against New Zealand, following a breach of team protocols. Former skipper Joe Root has been recalled to lead the side on an interim basis.
Protocol Breach and Investigation
Stokes and Atkinson violated team rules by breaking a midnight curfew after England's victory at Lord's on Sunday. The incident escalated into a confrontation involving Saracens rugby union player Totoa Auvaa. Both players remain under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the independent Cricket Regulator. However, concerns that Stokes might step down as captain or retire from international cricket have subsided.
The ECB has opted to leave both players out of the second Test at the Oval without imposing formal disciplinary action, buying time for the investigation to conclude.
Root Steps In as Captain
Surprisingly, vice-captain Harry Brook has not been elevated to the captaincy. Instead, Joe Root, who captained England for five years until 2022, has been appointed interim skipper. Root is regarded as the most mature presence in a dressing room that has faced criticism over its professionalism.
Brook, who has been white-ball captain for over a year and replaced Ollie Pope as Stokes's deputy last summer, was considered too risky for the role given the intense scrutiny the team's culture and relationship with alcohol will face. Brook himself was involved in a nightclub altercation during a pre-Ashes tour of New Zealand in November, resulting in a fine and a final warning from the Cricket Regulator.
Root, by contrast, has an impeccable disciplinary record and is seen as a safe pair of hands during a challenging week off the field.
Squad Changes
Jofra Archer is set to return after a break following the Indian Premier League and is expected to replace Atkinson in the playing XI. Jordan Cox has been added to the squad and may compete with James Rew and Rehan Ahmed for Stokes's spot in the side.
