The Socceroos have secured their place in the World Cup last 32 after a composed 0-0 draw against Paraguay, finishing second in Group D. Coach Tony Popovic hailed the performance as 'wonderful' and immediately turned his attention to the knockout clash in Dallas.
Match Summary
Australia dominated the first half, with right-flank combinations from Jordy Bos and Cristian Volpato causing problems for Paraguay. Despite several dangerous attacks, the Socceroos could not carve out a clear-cut chance. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach made a crucial injury-time save to preserve the draw, prompting Popovic to admit he looked at the clock and hoped for the final whistle.
Popovic's Reaction
'The staff, the players – just a wonderful young group of men – and now we go to Dallas and we'll try and do something special,' Popovic said after the match. He added, 'We were very good today, just a wonderful performance.' The coach made six changes to the side that lost to the USA, a decision that paid off.
Player Performances
Midfielder Aiden O'Neill was named player of the match but credited Bos, saying, 'They were a good combination, lots of threat... He's a special talent.' Winger Ajdin Hrustic revealed Bos had only trained on the right side in two sessions after Jacob Italiano's injury, joking that he called him Dani Alves.
Next Opponent
The Socceroos will face the second-placed team from Group G, which includes Egypt, Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand. The final placings will be decided on Friday (Saturday AEST). Popovic acknowledged the challenge: 'There's no easy route in the World Cup. You've got to be switched on, it has to be 100%.'
Looking Ahead
The team will enjoy a seven-day break before their last-32 match in Dallas. They are due to fly from Oakland on Wednesday. Hrustic said, 'Hopefully, we'll get one or two days off, and then we can calm down, enjoy that moment of qualifying, and then you will switch back on and get right back to work.'
