The Perth Scorchers have survived a dramatic batting collapse to defeat the Melbourne Renegades by four wickets in the Women's Big Bash League, denying the Renegades a chance to share top spot on the ladder.
Chasing 150 for victory at Junction Oval on Thursday, the Scorchers were cruising at 2-116 in the 13th over after opener Sophie Devine smashed 46 from 24 balls. However, the Renegades fought back, with off-spinner Alice Capsey taking four wickets for 14 runs in three overs, including two in the 13th over, to leave Perth struggling at 6-118.
Freya Kemp (18 not out) and Lilly Mills (15 not out) then steadied the innings, guiding the Scorchers to 6-151 with eight balls remaining. Capsey finished with 4-14 from her three overs.
Earlier, the Renegades were bowled out for 150 on the last ball of their 20 overs. Nicola Faltum top-scored with an unbeaten 41 off 28 balls, while Sarah Coyte made 24. Chloe Ainsworth took 2-17 from four overs for Perth, and Amy Edgar also claimed two wickets.
The Renegades would have joined Hobart at the top of the ladder with a win but instead stay third. They face cross-town rivals Melbourne Stars on Saturday, while the Scorchers travel to Hobart to play the Hurricanes.
