Glenn McGrath's stunning diving catch to dismiss England opener Michael Vaughan during the 2002 Ashes series has been unveiled as Toyota's latest Legendary Moment. The catch, which took place in the second Test of the 2002-03 Ashes, is now the 18th overall in the series and the second cricket moment after Steve Waugh's.
The moment was a game-changer in the match. Vaughan had scored 177 in the first innings and was on 41 not out in the second when he top-edged a slog-sweep off Shane Warne. The ball flew towards deep mid-wicket, but McGrath, not known for his fielding, sprinted and dived to take the catch. England collapsed after that and lost the Test by an innings and 51 runs.
McGrath recalled the catch, saying he saw the ball and ran as hard as he could, diving full stretch. He described how the ball hit his left hand and bounced into his right, and he held on as he slid along the ground. He noted that his back hurt later, but the moment remains special.
The catch was recreated in a TV ad featuring McGrath alongside comedians Matt Okine and Ryan Shelton. Toyota CMO Vin Naidoo said the moment honours the passion and history of cricket, bringing it to a new generation of fans.
