England head coach Brendon McCullum has voiced his concern for Ben Stokes' wellbeing after the all-rounder was dropped as captain for breaching the team's curfew during the ongoing Test series.
Stokes Dropped for Curfew Breach
Stokes was omitted from the playing XI for the third Test against New Zealand after he and several teammates were found to have broken the team's curfew rules. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that disciplinary action had been taken, with Stokes being stood down as captain for the match.
McCullum, speaking to reporters ahead of the Test, said he was 'concerned' for Stokes' mental and emotional state. 'Ben is a huge part of this team, and we care deeply about him as a person,' McCullum said. 'We want to make sure he's okay, and we'll support him through this.'
Team Culture Under Scrutiny
The incident has raised questions about the culture within the England camp, which has been praised for its positive environment under McCullum and Stokes. However, McCullum insisted that the team's values remain strong. 'We've built a culture of trust and responsibility, and when that's broken, we have to address it. But this doesn't define us.'
Stokes has been replaced as captain by Ollie Pope for the third Test, with the team aiming to level the series after going 1-0 down. McCullum confirmed that Stokes would be considered for selection in future matches but that his immediate focus was on his wellbeing.
England's management has also implemented stricter curfew protocols to prevent a repeat of the incident. 'We've spoken to the group and reinforced our expectations,' McCullum added. 'We move forward together.'
