CPL Introduces Red Card for Slow Over-Rates, Sunil Narine First Casualty

The Caribbean Premier League has made history by issuing the first red card in cricket, penalizing the Trinbago Knight Riders for a slow over-rate during their match against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. The new rule, introduced this season, requires a team to lose a player and keep six fielders inside the circle if they are behind schedule at the start of the final over.

Sunil Narine was the player withdrawn, despite having already taken 3-24 from his four overs. The Knight Riders, reduced to 10 men, conceded 18 runs in the final over but still won by six wickets, securing their first victory in three matches.

Kieron Pollard, the Knight Riders captain, criticized the rule, calling it 'ridiculous' and stating that it undermines the hard work of the team. He emphasized that players are following instructions and that penalties for minor delays are excessive.

Slow over-rates have been a persistent issue in cricket, with the International Cricket Council imposing fines and docking World Test Championship points for international teams. Recently, Australia lost 10 points and was fined half their match fees for being 10 overs short in the fourth Ashes Test, while England faced multiple fines during the series.
