England Test captain Ben Stokes has defended Jofra Archer's decision to miss the start of the Test summer for the Indian Premier League, warning that a stricter approach could lead to players like Archer not playing for England again. Archer, who has an ECB central contract until 2027, was excused from the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's to play for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, where he took 25 wickets.
Stokes acknowledged public frustration, particularly from former players Simon Doull, Mark Butcher, and Michael Atherton, but argued that critics are stuck in the past. 'There's another side to it, and a lot of it's got to do with the landscape of cricket,' Stokes said. 'There is so much more out there for players. There is a situation where it could get messy and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it in a different way.'
Archer flew to Barbados after his last IPL game on Friday for a break, as confirmed by coach Brendon McCullum. He is expected to play some part in the Test series against New Zealand but is unavailable for the first Test starting Thursday. His availability for the second Test at the Oval on 17 June is uncertain.
Stokes also admitted that England have 'consistently let ourselves down' in crucial moments of Test matches, a trend the team's reset aims to address. 'It's being a lot smarter in those big moments in games,' he said. 'Over the past 18 months we've contributed towards losing games of cricket on too much of a consistent basis.'
