Victorian Premier Cricket is investigating allegations of ball-tampering during a First XI match between Casey South Melbourne and Melbourne on Saturday. The incident occurred early on Day 2 of the game at a venue in Melbourne.
Umpires noticed the ball was out of condition on one side almost immediately when it came in from the outfield. It is alleged the ball had been scraped along the concrete boundary. A photo from the ground shows a red mark on the concrete, which appears to support the allegation.
The ball was replaced immediately. Cricket Victoria's Premier Cricket operations boss, Darren Anderson, confirmed on Sunday that an umpires' report is being prepared. Anderson stated that the ball will be collected from the umpires on Monday after the written report is lodged.
Casey South Melbourne is aware that one of its players has been reported for a level three offence under Cricket Victoria's code of conduct. Anderson said the umpires followed the correct procedures under the laws of cricket after noticing something suspicious.
