Cricket Australia is facing an estimated loss of more than $3 million after the first Ashes Test in Perth ended in just two days. The rapid finish meant foregone ticket sales for days three and four at Perth Stadium, dealing a financial blow to the governing body.
A record 101,514 spectators attended the Test, with 51,531 on day one and 49,983 on day two, surpassing the previous record of 96,463 set in Perth last year. However, the match ended early due to Travis Head's record-breaking innings and England's aggressive batting approach.
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg acknowledged the financial impact, saying, 'It's difficult for a number of different groups. Certainly us, on ticket sales and our partners and sponsors.' The loss comes after CA announced a deficit of $11.3 million at its annual general meeting last month.
Despite the setback, CA chair Mike Baird expressed optimism about the future, stating, 'Hang on to your hats because next year we are going to have a record year in cricket. You're going to see the most attendance, the most viewership, the most sponsorship.' The second Ashes Test, a day-night match at the Gabba, begins on December 4.
