The WNBL CEO has hit back at Perth Lynx coach Ryan Petrik over his handling of Chinese star Han Xu, following claims that the 211cm centre has been underutilized. Petrik had earlier criticized the league's scheduling and media focus on Xu, but the CEO insists the league has supported her integration.
Xu, who missed the first eight games due to commitments in China, has transformed the Lynx since her debut. The team has won 15 of 17 matches with her, averaging a 16-point victory margin compared to a 3.6-point loss before her arrival.
Lynx general manager Chris Earl highlighted Xu's off-court impact, noting that her jersey sales account for a third of total sales this season. 'She's brought a whole new demographic into the Perth Lynx fraternity,' Earl said.
Petrik praised Xu's movement, saying, 'She moves like someone who's 6'2 or 6'3, which is surreal to watch.' He added that her presence draws defensive attention, creating opportunities for teammates.
Xu herself downplays her celebrity, stating she wants space when shopping. Her focus remains on adapting to the WNBL's physical style, which she sees as a challenge to improve. The Lynx face Townsville in the grand final series starting Thursday.
