Baseball Team Forfeits Game After Players Refuse Pride Jerseys
Team Forfeits Over Pride Jersey Refusal

In a controversial move, the York Revolution, a professional baseball team in the Atlantic League, chose to forfeit a game after several players refused to wear Pride-themed jerseys. The incident occurred during the team's 11th annual Pride Night celebration on Thursday, June 18, at WellSpan Park.

Pride Night Plans Derailed

The Revolution had scheduled a game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, with players set to wear uniforms featuring rainbow sleeves to honor the LGBTQ+ community. However, the team announced that a number of players declined to wear the jerseys, leading to the cancellation of the game. Instead, the evening was transformed into a free celebration focused on recognition and inclusion.

"Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey, and the club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game," the team stated. "As a result, and out of respect for the Pride Community and the York community as a whole, the York Revolution has decided that the game on Thursday, June 18 will be forfeited and that Pride Night will continue on as the feature element of the evening at WellSpan Park."

Broader Context in Baseball

The players' refusal did not come as a complete shock, given that many baseball players come from conservative or religious backgrounds. This incident echoes a similar situation in Major League Baseball (MLB), where the league recently criticized players for writing Bible verses on their Pride Night caps. During a San Francisco Giants game against the Chicago Cubs, pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker wrote Bible verses on their Pride caps, while another pitcher, Sam Hentges, chose not to wear the cap at all.

The York Revolution and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, which operates independently of Major League Baseball affiliations. The forfeit underscores ongoing tensions between team initiatives promoting inclusivity and individual players' personal beliefs.
