Canberra's Rasam vegetarian restaurant, located in the heart of Civic, has announced it will close after just two years of operation. The restaurant, known for its South Indian-inspired plant-based cuisine, cited financial difficulties and shifting consumer preferences as primary reasons for the closure.
A Short-Lived Venture
Rasam opened in 2022 with a mission to offer healthy, flavorful vegetarian options in the city center. Despite a loyal customer base and positive reviews, the restaurant struggled to maintain profitability in a competitive dining landscape.
Owner Priya Sharma expressed sadness over the decision, stating that rising costs and lower-than-expected foot traffic made it impossible to continue. “We poured our hearts into Rasam, but the economic realities were too tough,” she said.
Impact on the Community
Regular patrons have voiced disappointment on social media, praising the restaurant's vibrant dishes and warm atmosphere. Many noted that Rasam filled a gap for affordable, high-quality vegetarian food in Civic.
The closure reflects broader challenges faced by independent eateries in Canberra, where rents and operational costs have surged post-pandemic. Several other small restaurants have also shut down in recent months.
What’s Next?
Rasam will serve its last meals on March 31. The team is working to ensure a smooth transition for staff, some of whom have already secured new positions. Sharma hinted at possibly reopening in a different format, such as a pop-up or catering service, but no concrete plans have been announced.
For now, fans are encouraged to visit one last time and enjoy signature dishes like the masala dosa and thali.
