A Tasmanian devil named Mary has been found safe and sound after spending two weeks on the run from her home at a Gold Coast theme park. She was discovered approximately two kilometres from the park, having managed to evade capture since her escape.
Escape and Search
Mary went missing from the theme park on June 3, sparking a widespread search effort involving park staff and local authorities. The two-week search covered the surrounding bushland and residential areas. Park officials used camera traps and scent trails to track her movements.
Discovery and Capture
Mary was finally located on Wednesday morning by a park employee who spotted her near a creek. She was captured using a humane trap baited with her favourite food. A veterinary check confirmed she is in good health, despite her extended absence.
The theme park's wildlife team expressed relief at her safe return, noting that Mary is a beloved resident and a key part of their conservation program. She has been returned to her enclosure, which has been reinforced to prevent future escapes.
Background
Tasmanian devils are endangered, and the park participates in breeding programs to help preserve the species. Mary was born at the park and has been part of their educational exhibits. Her escape prompted a review of enclosure security.
Park management thanked the public for their assistance and assured guests that all animals are well cared for. Mary is now settling back into her routine, and the park expects to reopen her exhibit soon.
