Newcastle Basketball is expected to lodge its response to submissions on its proposed new stadium this month after three deadline extensions. The association is preparing a response to almost 2000 submissions received about the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre at New Lambton.
The association has also been asked to provide detailed responses to queries raised by agencies and the public about issues such as flooding, traffic, and social impacts. The response to submissions was initially due on January 12, 2026, but the association has received three extensions since.
Hunter Indoor Sports Centre project consultant Simon Haire said Newcastle Basketball was working with the project consultant team to ensure a 'comprehensive response' to all concerns raised. 'We are looking forward to this project moving into the next phase of assessment,' Mr Haire said.
The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) sets an indicative due date for response to submissions. A spokesperson for DPHI said an applicant may request an extension to the response to submissions timeframe if additional time was required to prepare their response to submissions and finalise any technical documents.
Once the response is received, the state-significant application will be assessed and determined. The decision will be deferred to the Independent Planning Commission due to more than 50 unique objections being made about the application. The $90 million application features 12 courts including a show court with seating capacity for 2500 people, car parking, a gym, and cafe.
