The Dallas Mavericks have fired general manager Nico Harrison, nine months after the widely criticized trade of Luka Doncic. The move came a day after fans chanted "fire Nico" during a 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Harrison's decision to send Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis in February has been called the worst trade in NBA history. Davis has missed 30 of 44 regular-season games since arriving, and the Mavericks are 3-8 this season.
Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi have been appointed co-interim general managers. Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont acknowledged fan frustration in a letter, saying, "When the results don't meet expectations, it's my responsibility to act."
Harrison was in his fourth season and had previously helped the Mavericks reach the Western Conference finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024. However, the Doncic trade and a slow start led to his downfall.
Empty seats have been common at the American Airlines Center this season, a trend not seen since 2018 when the team drafted Doncic. The Mavericks missed the playoffs last year after Doncic led them to the finals.
