The Illawarra Hawks have forced a deciding third game in their NBL semi-final series against Melbourne United, winning 113-108 in overtime at the WIN Sports and Entertainment Centre on Sunday.
Import Gary Clark led the Hawks with a double-double of 31 points and 16 rebounds, while Will Hickey contributed 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tyler Harvey added 23 points, including key plays down the stretch.
Melbourne United, the minor premiers, had been expected to sweep the series but now face a winner-takes-all game three at John Cain Arena on Wednesday night.
The Hawks overcame an early nine-point deficit, with Clark scoring 11 points in the first quarter to keep his team within striking distance. United centre Jo Lual-Acuil Jr was dominant early, scoring 11 of United's first 15 points, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Luke Travers left the court with a knee injury in the second quarter but returned to the bench, providing a boost for United. The Hawks took a narrow 50-49 lead into halftime, and the game remained tight throughout the second half.
In overtime, the Hawks outscored United 16-11 to secure the win. Hickey's layup with seconds left in regulation forced the extra period. “It’s just crazy to see where we are today versus four or five months ago,” Clark said. “Just a resilient group of guys, it’s just team effort … every night it’s someone different.”
