WA Government Dismisses Basil Zempilas' 2030 Commonwealth Games Bid as 'Brain Fart'

WA Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas has called on the state government to launch a late bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, but the government has rejected the proposal as an expensive 'brain fart' and 'thought bubble'. Zempilas argued that Perth may never host an Olympics and that the Games would provide excitement at a fraction of the cost, especially after the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth drew large crowds featuring athletes like Gout Gout, Lachlan Kennedy, Jessica Hull, and Peter Bol.

Acting Sports Minister John Carey criticized the idea, saying it would cost billions and divert funds from health and housing. He noted that Victoria's withdrawal from the 2026 Games due to cost overruns, initially budgeted at $2.6 billion, highlighted the financial risks. Carey defended spending on other events like UFC and soccer matches, arguing the Games' magnitude was far greater.

Premier Roger Cook also dismissed the bid, calling the Commonwealth Games a 'sugar hit' that would not provide sustained economic growth. He said he had seen no evidence that the return on investment justifies the expense.

Seven Commonwealth nations and territories have expressed interest in hosting the 2030 or 2034 Games, including India, Nigeria, Canada, and New Zealand. The host for 2030 is expected to be finalized in November. David Smith from Athletics West said the success of the recent championships shows Perth could handle the event, citing strong stadiums and partnerships.
