Mirra Andreeva's fairytale run at Wimbledon came to a crashing halt on Wednesday as the 17-year-old Russian qualifier fell to former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in the quarter-finals. Krejcikova, who had struggled with form and injury in recent months, produced a masterclass in resilience to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Centre Court.
Andreeva's Stellar Start
Andreeva, the youngest player to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since 2019, started with breathtaking confidence. She broke Krejcikova's serve in the opening game and held her own with a mix of powerful groundstrokes and delicate drop shots. The Russian teenager took the first set 6-4, leaving the Czech veteran visibly frustrated.
Krejcikova, a former world No. 2, had not won a match on grass this season before Wimbledon but found her rhythm in the second set. She began to read Andreeva's serve better and exploited the Russian's tendency to rush points. A decisive break in the sixth game gave Krejcikova a 4-2 lead, and she served out the set to level the match.
Krejcikova's Resurgence
The deciding set saw Krejcikova dominate from the baseline, moving Andreeva from side to side with heavy topspin forehands. The Czech broke early for a 2-0 lead and never looked back. Andreeva, who had beaten three seeded players to reach this stage, began to show signs of fatigue and frustration, double-faulting on break point to trail 4-1.
Krejcikova sealed the match with an ace, her sixth of the day, after one hour and 48 minutes. "I knew I had to stay patient and wait for my chances," Krejcikova said in her on-court interview. "Mirra is an incredible talent, but experience helped me today."
Impact on Andreeva's Future
Despite the defeat, Andreeva's performance has marked her as one of the most promising teenagers in tennis. She will rise into the top 50 of the WTA rankings for the first time. "I gave everything I had," Andreeva said. "I'm proud of what I achieved here, and I'll learn from this."
Krejcikova now awaits the winner of the quarter-final between Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina. The Czech is bidding to reach her first Wimbledon semi-final since 2021, when she won the French Open. For Andreeva, the future looks bright, but for now, Krejcikova's resurgence has ended the teenager's dream.
