Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier claimed his first Tour de France stage win on Friday, powering to victory in stage seven from Montargis to Châteauroux. The 189.8-kilometer flat stage was expected to end in a bunch sprint, and Merlier delivered, beating Wout van Aert and Caleb Ewan to the line.
Stage Details
Merlier, riding for Alpecin-Deceuninck, timed his sprint perfectly in the final 200 meters. “I can’t believe it, this is a dream come true,” Merlier said after the stage. “The team worked incredibly hard to keep me in position, and I just had to finish it off.” The victory is the 30-year-old’s first in the Tour, having previously won stages in the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.
The stage saw no major changes in the general classification. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) retains the yellow jersey, 25 seconds ahead of Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and 1 minute 12 seconds ahead of Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers).
Race Dynamics
A two-man breakaway consisting of Anthony Perez (Cofidis) and Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-KTM) animated the early part of the stage, building a lead of over five minutes. However, the peloton, led by the sprint teams, gradually reeled them in, with Perez being caught with 12 kilometers remaining. Rolland was swept up with eight kilometers to go.
In the final kilometers, the sprint trains of Jumbo-Visma, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, and Alpecin-Deceuninck jostled for position. Van Aert, who had won two stages earlier in the race, launched his sprint early but was passed by Merlier in the final meters. Ewan, who had been struggling with form, showed signs of recovery with a third-place finish.
Impact on General Classification
With no time gaps among the favorites, the GC standings remain unchanged. Pogacar holds a comfortable lead, but Vingegaard and Carapaz are poised to challenge in the mountains. The race now heads into the Massif Central, with stage eight featuring a hilly profile that could shake up the overall standings.
“It’s good to get through another day without losing time,” Pogacar said. “The team did a great job protecting me. We’ll see what happens in the coming days.”
