Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty was enough to send France past a stubborn Paraguay side and into the World Cup quarter-finals, as the defending champions weathered a heatwave and a dogged defensive display in Philadelphia.
France made to work in oppressive heat
On a day when Philadelphia celebrated the semiquincentennial anniversary of the US declaration of independence, temperatures soared to 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), forcing players to take a hydration break in each half. France, heavily favoured, dominated possession from the start but struggled to break down a compact Paraguay side set up in a 5-4-1 formation.
In the first half, France completed 208 passes to Paraguay's 33, but most were in front of the defence. The best chance came in the 35th minute when Michael Olise's free-kick was scuffed across goal by Gustavo Velázquez, but Paraguay cleared.
Second-half breakthrough
After a subdued opening 45 minutes, France increased the tempo after the break. Manu Koné had the first shot on target in the 55th minute, a long-range effort well saved by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. With little penetration, coach Didier Deschamps replaced Bradley Barcola with Désiré Doué on the hour mark.
The substitution paid off immediately. Doué took on the Paraguay defence and won a penalty in the 64th minute after being brought down by Diego Gómez. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially waved play on, but the video assistant referee intervened, leading to a spot-kick after a monitor review.
Mbappé delivers from the spot
Mbappé stepped up and calmly sent Gill the wrong way, rolling the ball into the left side of the net. It was his third goal of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the golden boot race. France held on comfortably, with Paraguay rarely threatening an equaliser.
"We knew it would be tough, but we stayed patient and got the job done," said France captain Kylian Mbappé after the match. Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro praised his team's effort: "We gave everything, but against a team like France, one mistake can cost you."
Key moments and statistics
- France had 68% possession and 12 shots to Paraguay's 3.
- The only goal came from a penalty, Mbappé's third of the tournament.
- Paraguay's Julio Enciso was a constant nuisance, but isolated up front.
- France advanced to face the winner of the Argentina-Mexico match in the quarter-finals.
Les Bleus will now prepare for a tougher test in the last eight, but this grinding victory showed they can win even when not at their fluent best.
