Jay Vine Suffers Broken Elbow and Concussion in Giro Crash

Australian cyclist Jay Vine has been diagnosed with a fractured elbow and concussion following a horrific crash on stage two of the Giro d'Italia in Bulgaria on Saturday. The 30-year-old, riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, was caught up in a high-speed pile-up on a slippery descent with 22 kilometers remaining in the stage.

Team medical director Dr Adrian Rotunno confirmed on Sunday that Vine sustained a concussion and an elbow fracture, while teammate Marc Soler suffered a pelvic fracture. Neither injury is expected to require surgery. Adam Yates, the team leader, also crashed heavily and suffered abrasions and a laceration to his left ear, later showing delayed concussive symptoms. Yates will not start stage three and all three riders will return home for recovery.

Vine's crash occurred when Soler's front wheel lost traction, causing several riders to hit the armco barrier at high speed. Vine, riding directly behind Soler, had no time to avoid the collision. The incident marks Vine's third serious crash in just 13 race days this year, following a collision with a kangaroo at the Tour Down Under in January and a crash at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in March.

The crash highlights the ongoing risks in professional cycling, coming 15 years after the death of Belgian sprinter Wouter Weylandt at the Giro d'Italia. Recent fatalities include Colombian rider Cristian Camilo Munoz, who died from a knee infection after a crash in April, and Swiss rider Gino Mäder, who died after falling into a ravine in 2023. Vine himself suffered a fractured skull and vertebrae in a 2022 crash that left him fearing he might never walk again.
