In a stunning upset on Centre Court, British wildcard Arthur Fery defeated Italy's Flavio Cobolli 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday to advance to the Wimbledon semi-finals, where he will face world No. 2 Alexander Zverev.
Breakthrough Performance
The 22-year-old Fery, ranked 127th in the world, played the match of his life, saving all three break points he faced and converting three of his five opportunities on Cobolli's serve. The victory marks the first time a British male wildcard has reached the semi-finals at the All England Club since Tim Henman in 1998.
Fery's aggressive baseline game and powerful serve, which reached speeds of 136 mph, proved too much for the 24-year-old Cobolli, who had been in impressive form leading up to the quarter-final. Cobolli, seeded 15th, had not dropped a set in his previous four matches.
Match Statistics
According to tournament statistics, Fery won 82% of his first-serve points and 54% of his second-serve points. He also fired 15 aces, while Cobolli managed only eight. The Italian committed 28 unforced errors to Fery's 18, a key factor in the match's outcome.
"I'm absolutely speechless," Fery said in his on-court interview. "To play like this on Centre Court in front of my family and friends is a dream come true. Flavio is a great player, so I knew I had to be at my best."
Road to the Semi-Final
Fery's journey to the last four has been remarkable. He entered the tournament as a wildcard after winning the LTA's Wildcard Challenge, and has since defeated three seeded players: 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the second round, 8th seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth round, and now Cobolli. His only dropped set came in the third round against qualifier Luca Nardi.
"I've been working so hard with my team, and it's all paying off," Fery added. "But the job is not done yet. I have a tough match against Sascha [Zverev] next."
Looking Ahead: Fery vs Zverev
The semi-final clash with Zverev, a two-time Grand Slam champion, will be a significant step up in class. The German has been dominant at this year's Wimbledon, losing only one set en route to the semi-finals. He defeated American Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in the quarter-finals.
Fery and Zverev have never met on the ATP Tour, but the British wildcard will be aiming to become the first British male finalist at Wimbledon since Andy Murray in 2016. The match is scheduled for Friday on Centre Court.
"Sascha is one of the best players in the world, but I'll give it my all," Fery said. "I have nothing to lose."
