Australian Sprinter Jemma Stapleton Dies at 25 on Holiday

Australian sprinter and Stawell Gift finalist Jemma Stapleton, aged 25, has died while on a family holiday overseas, prompting an outpouring of tributes from the athletics community and loved ones.

Details of the Tragedy

The cause of her death has not yet been officially disclosed. However, an online fundraising page set up by her brother stated that she “tragically lost her life in an accident.” The family was on holiday at the time of the incident.

Fundraising and Community Support

A GoFundMe campaign, created on Thursday and approved by the family, has already surpassed its $100,000 goal. The page reads: “It is with great sadness that our beautiful friends the Stapleton family are facing the unmeasurable grief while on a family holiday with the passing of their beautiful daughter, sister and partner Jemma.” The funds aim to alleviate financial pressure so the family can grieve together and spend time navigating this loss.

Tributes from Loved Ones

Stapleton’s partner, Tyler Gray, expressed his grief on Instagram: “I can’t put into words the hurt I am feeling. You are the single greatest thing to happen to me and I am so grateful for the love we shared. I love you with all my heart.” Her brother, Joel, posted: “Rest in peace. I love you so much, I promise I’ll make you proud. You were the best sister and my best friend, I’ll forever miss you.” He also shared the fundraising page, thanking supporters.

Reactions from Sporting Clubs

Lysterfield junior football club, where Stapleton’s partner and brother were involved, paid tribute: “While this news reaches us through those connections, today our thoughts are with Jemma, her family, friends and all those who loved her.”

Stapleton began her athletics career with Knox Little Athletics. The organisation praised her talent, determination and love for the sport, noting: “Her achievements on the track were a reflection of her dedication, competitive spirit and the joy she brought to the sport. Many within our centre will remember Jemma and the Stapleton family with great fondness.”

The Victorian Athletic League described her as a valued member whose presence left a lasting impact, extending condolences to her family and friends. Rowville Netball Club, where she was a former player, called the loss of someone so young “unimaginable” and said she would always be remembered as part of their family.
