Australia Crush England to Win Women's T20 World Cup Final

Australia clinched their sixth Women's T20 World Cup title with a commanding 71-run victory over England in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. The hosts posted a formidable total of 5-184 off their 20 overs, then bowled out England for 113 in 17.1 overs to seal a comprehensive win in front of a record crowd of 86,174.

Dominant Batting Display Sets Up Victory

After being sent in to bat, Australia got off to a flying start through openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney. Healy smashed 75 off 39 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes, while Mooney contributed a steady 49 off 37 deliveries. Their 123-run partnership laid the foundation for Australia's imposing total. Captain Meg Lanning chipped in with 21 off 14, and Ashleigh Gardner provided a late flourish with 23 not out off 10 balls.

England's bowlers struggled to contain the Australian onslaught, with only Sophie Ecclestone (2-31) and Katherine Brunt (1-35) managing to take wickets. The fielding also let England down, with two crucial dropped catches off Healy early in her innings.

England's Chase Falls Apart

Chasing 185 for victory, England never recovered from the loss of early wickets. Opener Danni Wyatt fell for 12 off the bowling of Megan Schutt, and captain Heather Knight was dismissed for a duck by Jess Jonassen. Nat Sciver top-scored with 43 off 34 balls, but wickets fell regularly at the other end. Schutt finished with 3-20, while Jonassen and Gardner took two wickets each.

According to Australia captain Meg Lanning, the team's preparation and execution were key to the victory. “We’ve been building towards this for a long time. The way the girls stepped up in a big final was outstanding. We knew we had to be at our best against a quality England side, and we were,” she said.

Record Crowd Witnesses History

The final attracted a record attendance for a women's cricket match in Australia, surpassing the previous mark of 53,709 set during the 2020 T20 World Cup final at the same venue. The crowd of 86,174 also set a new world record for a standalone women's sporting event in Australia.

England captain Heather Knight acknowledged Australia's superiority on the day. “They outplayed us in all departments. We didn't execute our plans well enough, and they had a brilliant day. It's disappointing, but we have to learn from this and come back stronger,” Knight said.

Australia's Dominance Continues

The victory extends Australia's unbeaten run at Women's T20 World Cups to 18 matches, dating back to 2018. They have now won the title six times, more than any other nation, with England having won four titles. Player of the match Alyssa Healy said the team's belief was unwavering. “We back ourselves in big games. The crowd was incredible today, and we wanted to put on a show for them,” Healy said.
