10 Must-Have Running Essentials for Your Marathon in 2026
10 Must-Have Running Essentials for Marathon 2026

Whether you are a casual jogger, a dedicated run club member, or just there for the atmosphere, running in 2026 has become a significant trend. From gear and clothing to expensive technology, it is now a costly hobby, and it can be challenging to know where to begin.

In honor of Global Running Day on June 3, I have compiled a list of the 10 essentials that are helping me prepare for my first marathon in Sydney in August.

1. ASICS Superblast 3, $340

A great run starts with great shoes, and none are better than these. The ASICS Superblast 3s offer the perfect balance of responsiveness and support. I find myself reaching for them whether I am heading out for a recovery run, tempo session, or long run. I own the Cobalt Burst and Light Orange shade, but ASICS has since released several other versatile colorways.

2. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, $399

I am absolutely lost without these over-ear earbuds on a run. They make it infinitely easier to while away the kilometers listening to music or a podcast. Having tried numerous earphones, I find these the most comfortable and least likely to fall off. They also tuck neatly into your pocket after a run and wick away sweat, rain, and moisture, so you do not need to worry about them breaking when it rains 10 kilometers from home.

3. Peloton Treadmill, $4,999

I have had the opportunity to review the Peloton Treadmill in the lead-up to the Sydney Marathon, and it has been a game-changer for my training. I never considered myself a treadmill runner before, but now I cannot imagine life without one. Cold, wet, and dark outside but an interval session in your plan? No worries. The treadmill is there. Keen to maintain a precise pace but struggle outdoors? Peloton has your back. The additional extras, like the Peloton Marathon Plan with strength and mobility workouts, have made all the difference. Hard recommend.

4. Garmin Forerunner 970, $1,139

Anyone who knows me knows I will rave about the benefits of a Garmin watch. This Forerunner 970 is the best of the bunch. It accurately tracks cadence, distance, heart rate, and more, plus additional health metrics like sleep tracking, VO2 max, readiness, and training status. I cannot live without my Garmin and even struggle to take it off for the office. A must-buy.

5. Sweaty Betty Power 6" Biker Shorts, $99

Finding the right running shorts that do not ride up but are big enough to store an iPhone and a gel is like searching for a needle in a haystack. I was thrilled to discover the Sweaty Betty Power 6" Biker Shorts, available in various colors and sizes. I now own three pairs and reach for them daily. Comfortable, sweat-wicking, and great for on-the-go storage, these are my top pick for running shorts in 2026.

6. lululemon Fast and Free Singlet, $99

This Fast and Free Singlet in Oxford Red is my favorite and most-complimented running top. It has an easy fit that floats away from the body, and I like to tuck mine in for a more structured look. The lightweight fabric features four-way stretch, is sweat-wicking, and quick-drying, making it perfect for training in hot climates.

7. Pillar Performance Triple Magnesium in Natural Berry, $46.99

Running is not just about the act itself but also recovery. Pillar Performance's Triple Magnesium in Natural Berry is now my go-to evening drink (besides a Pinot Noir). It is tasty, easy to mix with water using the included scoop, and promotes sleep. I recommend it to everyone and even travel with it.

8. Your Reformer Mat Pilates Equipment Starter Pack, $99

Pilates has been a staple in my health and wellness routine for years, but with two young kids and a busy work life, getting to class three times a week is hard. This starter pack includes a yoga mat, Pilates ball, and booty band set (light, medium, heavy), allowing me to get a solid workout in as little as a 20-minute lunch break. Much better than eating at my desk.

9. Sodii Citrus Flavoured Everyday Hydration Salts, $64.90

My runner friend Nicole introduced me to these, saying she would use them at her upcoming marathon in Brisbane. Since trying them, I have not looked back. This salty hydration drink mix is made with natural ingredients, has less than 0.3g carbs per serve, and contains key electrolytes. It is delicious post-run and aids recovery. My go-to is Salty Citrus, but I have enjoyed every flavor, even pineapple.

10. ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo, $380

Every runner needs a pair of speed shoes for race day. My go-tos are these ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyos. I have achieved all my PBs in them this year and last, which may be a coincidence as I get faster, but it feels noteworthy. These carbon-plated shoes are definitely what I will be wearing when I line up for the marathon in August.
