World Athletics has officially recognized Gout Gout's stunning 19.67-second performance in the 200 meters as the world under-20 record, putting to rest any skepticism about the time's validity. The 18-year-old Australian sprinter achieved the mark during the 200m final at the Australian Championships in Sydney on April 12, improving his personal best by a third of a second in a breathtaking display.
Record Confirmation Ends Doubts
The international athletics governing body announced on Tuesday that Gout's record stands, despite earlier criticisms regarding the wind reading and the strength of the field. The wind reading of 1.7 meters per second was within the legal limit of 2.0, but the exceptional performances of all competitors raised eyebrows. Runner-up Aidan Murphy clocked 19.88 seconds, the second-fastest time in Australian history, and the first seven finishers all set personal bests.
World Athletics stated: "Australian sprinter Gout stormed to his world U20 200m record of 19.67 when retaining his title at the Australian Championships in Sydney on 12 April. The 18-year-old smashed his previous PB of 20.02, which was also the senior Oceanian record. He also took 0.02 off the world U20 record of 19.69 set by Erriyon Knighton in Eugene in 2022."
Other Records Ratified
This ratification was part of a batch of six recent performances formally approved by World Athletics, including world records by Josh Hoey in the men's 800m short track, Yomif Kejelcha in the men's 10km, and Toshikazu Yamanishi in the men's half marathon race walk.
Knighton's Unratified Mark
Ratification is not automatic. In contrast, Erriyon Knighton's 19.49-second run in 2022 at the LSU Invitational was never ratified. World Athletics confirmed in December 2022 that the mark could not be recognized as a world U20 record because specific anti-doping testing requirements were not met. Knighton was later banned in 2025 for four years for doping, after a failed drug test the previous year; his defense of contaminated oxtail was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Gout's performance now scrubs Knighton's 2022 personal best of 19.69 seconds as the World U20 200m record.
Upcoming Race
The Australian sprint star is scheduled to race Noah Lyles in a marquee 150m event in Czechia on June 16.
