Jaime Farrelly pleads guilty to drug possession

AFL legend Jaime Farrelly has pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine following a police search at a Sydney hotel. The 52-year-old former Sydney Swans and St Kilda star appeared in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday, where he admitted to one count of possessing a prohibited drug. Police discovered 0.4 grams of cocaine in Farrelly's possession during a routine search at a hotel in Sydney's CBD on March 22, 2024.

Court Appearance and Guilty Plea

Farrelly, who played 125 AFL games for the Swans and Saints, was represented by his lawyer, who entered the guilty plea on his behalf. The court heard that Farrelly had no prior criminal record and had been cooperative with police during the search. Magistrate Jennifer Giles noted the small quantity of the drug and Farrelly's clean record, indicating that a conviction may not be recorded if he complies with a good behaviour bond.

Potential Penalty

Prosecutors did not oppose a non-conviction order, which would allow Farrelly to avoid a criminal record if he meets certain conditions. The matter was adjourned to June 18 for sentencing, with Farrelly required to undergo drug counseling and provide a urine sample for testing. According to legal experts, a non-conviction bond is common for first-time offenders with small amounts of illicit substances.

Farrelly's Career and Reaction

Farrelly, who was drafted by Sydney in 1991 and later played for St Kilda, has worked as a media commentator since retiring from football. He did not comment outside court but his lawyer stated he was "remorseful" and "committed to addressing his personal issues." The AFL declined to comment on the matter, as it is a personal legal issue.
