West Coast Eagles were given a scare on the first day of AFL pre-season when star recruit Harley Reid appeared to suffer a calf issue during a fitness test. The former No.1 draft pick was participating in the maximal aerobic speed (MAS) test at Mineral Resources Park on Monday when he suddenly pulled up, pointing to his calf.
7NEWS Perth reporter Ryan Daniels initially reported that Reid had stopped, but later confirmed the issue was likely cramp. Reid stretched out, put his shoes back on, and rejoined training shortly after, easing concerns. The MAS test involves a recorded beep that increases speed as players run laps.
Reid spoke with fitness staff and coach Andrew McQualter before moving to the sidelines for treatment. He was later seen doing short passes alongside Nic Naitanui. The incident comes after Reid told The West Australian last week that he had focused on improving his endurance during the off-season.
Several experienced players, including captain Liam Duggan, Elliot Yeo, and Jake Waterman, joined the session but followed their own training program rather than the fitness test. CEO Don Pyke emphasized the importance of a strong pre-season, stating the players have the right attitude to climb back up the ladder.
