GWS captain Toby Greene has joined Port Adelaide's Zak Butters in an exclusive and costly club, becoming the first two AFL players to accumulate more than $50,000 in tribunal fines over their careers.
Greene's Latest Fine
Greene was the only player sanctioned from Saturday's matches, facing a $1,875 fine for striking Carlton's Nic Newman if he accepts an early plea. This brings his total career fines to $50,725 across 275 games, according to AFL records.
Unless the Giants successfully challenge the charge at the tribunal, Greene will have paid over $50,000 in fines, a milestone previously reached only by Butters earlier this season.
Butters' Record
Zak Butters, the Port Adelaide firebrand, has amassed $51,125 in fines over 153 games, despite a shorter career. He has been suspended twice and sanctioned 22 times. While neither player would compare, Butters has Greene well-covered in terms of fine density per game.
Historical Context
Greene holds the record for the most charges in VFL/AFL history with 32, and has been suspended for 16 games as he approaches 300 matches. His aggressive playing style has made him a frequent figure at the tribunal.
The AFL's fine system penalizes players for reportable offenses that do not warrant suspension, with fines escalating for repeat offenders. Both Greene and Butters exemplify how persistent infractions can lead to significant financial penalties.
