Ex-Essendon Star Zaharakis Chases Ironman Dream

Former Essendon midfielder David Zaharakis has swapped the AFL field for the grueling world of Ironman triathlons. The 34-year-old, who played 226 games for the Bombers, is now pursuing a new athletic challenge after retiring from professional football in 2021.

Zaharakis revealed that the training demands of Ironman events are vastly different from AFL preparation. While AFL training focuses on short bursts of high-intensity activity, Ironman training requires long hours of endurance work across swimming, cycling, and running.

He is currently preparing for his next competition, though specific details about the event have not been disclosed. Zaharakis said the transition has been challenging but rewarding, as he adapts to a completely different physical and mental regimen.
